Honolulu has been making a big name for itself in the last year and their latest release blew me away. The J2CR Crystal Blue is an upgrade to the original J2CR paddle, and it brings in a new grit technology that is insanely impressive.
This is one of the best pickleball paddles for spin ever released because the surface grit is extra-long-lasting, and it generates some of the nastiest spin I've seen. It does a lot more than that too, and at $175.50 (when you use our 10% discount), it's an attractive price for serious players who don't want to fork out $250 every time their grit wears down.

Buy or pass?
Buy if:
You want grit that really lasts:
Honolulu's durable grit is the real deal – you can rely on this for a long time and won't have to buy a new paddle anytime soon.
You want elite spin:
I was hitting all kinds of crazy spin with this paddle – my topspin dinks and drops were phenomenal.
You want an expertly weighted, super-fast paddle:
I love this paddle's design, from the aerodynamic hybrid shape to the balanced weighting – it's so fast in the hand despite having a thicker 16 mm core.
Pass if:
You want elite control:
while it scores above average for control, it doesn't have as much dwell time as an elite control paddle like the 11SIX24 Vapor Power 2.
You don't want a hybrid shape:
the J2CR is the hybrid-shaped model – check out the elongated J6CR Crystal Blue and widebody J3CR Crystal Blue.
You're a brand-new player:
if you're fresh to the game, you might want something a little softer and cheaper – take a look at the best pickleball paddles for beginners.
Honolulu's new grit is no gimmick
Honolulu made a big splash in the last year with the J2NF pickleball paddle, an all-court foam paddle that gained a big following, then the Honolulu J6CR, a power-forward beast for under $200. Rather than rest on their laurels, they've come out swinging again, this time with their Crystal Blue paddles, which take grit technology to a new level.
All paddle brands make big claims with their proprietary tech, but I'm happy to report that this grit truly delivers. It grips the ball so strongly. My serves lifted up and came down hard. My aggressive topspin dinks were deadly. The friction from the grit combined with how fast I could whip the paddle face made it one of the best spin paddles I've ever played with.
It's not one of the most explosive power paddles like the J6CR, but it's still a hard-hitting paddle. Drives came with a ton of pace and powerful serves, overheads, and putaways felt effortless.

The balanced weighting and hybrid shape made it really fast in hands battles. I could switch effortlessly from offense, smashing the ball at my opponent, to defense, getting the paddle down and digging out balls when I was under attack.
Control is the only area where it's not a 9 or above. It's still above average, it just doesn't have the softer dwell time of a paddle like the FLiK F3. That's why I recommend it as an upper intermediate paddle, all the way to a pro-level paddle. Newer players will probably want something more plush and soft-feeling for control.
If you're sick of buying a new paddle every time the grit wears down, this is the solution. After ten hours of play, I haven't seen the slightest wear on the grit, and the paddle is extremely well built all around, with a long-lasting multi-density foam core. Crazy value for money at just $175.50 (with our 10% discount).

How the Honolulu J2CR Crystal Blue plays
| Category | Rating | Notes |
| Power | 9/10 | Not a 10 like a Selkirk Boomstik, but there's effortless pace on drives, overheads, and serves. Impressive power. |
| Control | 8/10 | This doesn't have as much dwell time as the top touch paddles, but it's above average. Anyone at 4.0 level or above will be able to control it easily. |
| Spin | 10/10 | This is where it sets itself apart. Phenomenal spin generation from a surface that will outlast the rest. |
| Forgiveness | 9/10 | Great forgiveness for a hybrid paddle. If you mishit, you're still getting the ball back and staying in the point. In hands battles, if somebody blasts at you, you can dig the ball out nicely even if it comes off the side of the paddle. |
| Weighting | 10/10 | I usually don't like hybrid shapes, but they've nailed the weighting here. The handle feels a little shorter, and the overall feel is so balanced. It helped me to play a really fast game and made it easy to transition back and forth from offense to defense. |
| Grip | 9/10 | I like to see them offering two handle lengths: a standard 5.5-inch grip which I like, and a 6-inch one for people who like longer handles for backhands and leverage. The only reason I wouldn't give it a 10 is because the factory grip is breaking down and getting extremely dirty and kind of slick. I'll put an overgrip on this one. |
| Durability | 10/10 | Supreme durability. Paddles like this are making pure carbon fiber paddles a thing of the past. I'd usually expect to see scratches and minor wear after 10 hours but this CFC face shows nothing at all. The grit feels just as tough. For somebody who puts 15 to 20 hours on a paddle a week, it's nice to have one that actually continues to last. |
| Aerodynamics | 10/10 | Even though it's a thicker 16 mm core, they designed the hybrid shape and handle in a way that makes it as fast as a 14 mm or widebody paddle. It soars through the air, excelling on defense as I can get the paddle into position so quickly. |
✅ Pros
Long-lasting grit at an affordable price
Honolulu's Crystal Blue grit is giving 11SIX24's HexGrit a run for its money. This and the 11SIX24 Vapor Power 2 paddle are the two best grits I've seen in the $200 range. The Honolulu is $25 cheaper (after discounts) and gets even better spin. This is my top recommendation if you're tired of your paddle's grit wearing down quickly.
Spin galore
The combination of grit and paddle speed made generating spin so much fun and so deadly for my opponents. It more than makes up for any slight lack of a cushioned control feel. When you're taking rolls out of the air, you can get crazy angles with it. On my serve, that ball was lifting up and coming down hard. My aggressive topspin dinks and drops were deadly.
Weighting and aerodynamics dialed in
I usually don't like hybrid shapes, but I love this one. The weighting feels so good in the hands. It actually felt as fast as the quickest paddle I've played with recently, the Franklin Anna Leigh Waters Aurelius.
❌ Considerations
Control is above average, not elite
To compare this paddle again to the 11SIX24 Vapor Power 2, the Honolulu has more power and spin, but the 11SIX24 has better control. If you value more softness for your touch game, try one of the top control paddles instead.
Power is not a 10
It's hard to find a fault with this paddle. It had more than enough power for me but if you want a more explosive paddle that prioritizes aggression even more, try one of the best pickleball paddles for power.
Honolulu J2CR Crystal Blue price – is it worth it?
The Crystal Blue Honolulu J2CR scored very highly on our value metric (we divide the price by the paddle's overall score ratings). It slotted right in beside the Honolulu Sword & Shield J2NF, which for so long held down the #1 spot on our top pickleball paddle guide.
Honolulu keeps making paddles that perform to a high standard, last a long time, and cost substantially less than the top tier competitors from CRBN, JOOLA, and Selkirk. To be succinct: the new J2CR is 100% worth it. In fact, it will save you money in the long run as you won't need to replace this paddle anytime soon.
